Public warned: Don’t buy, sell ‘already registered’ SIM cards online

BUYING and selling “already registered” SIM cards through online marketplaces is illegal and those doing this will be apprehended, an official said.

Frederick Amores, director of the Department of Communications and Information Technology in Central Visayas (DICT 7), emphasized the possibility that owners of these registered SIM cards might be involved in questionable transactions and activities.

He said buying and selling these SIM cards from online marketplaces could mean a violation of Republic Act 11934, also known as the SIM Card Registration Act.

RA 11934 mandates the registration of all SIM cards prior to activation.

Under the law, giving false information or using a fraudulent identity to register a SIM can result in a six-month to two-year sentence in prison, a fine of at least P300,000, or both.

The sale of a registered SIM is also prohibited by the implementing rules and regulations of RA 11934. It carries a sentence of six months to six years in prison, a fine of P100,000 to P300,000, or both. (KJF)
