TWO senatorial candidates committed to help pass into law the Mega Cebu Development Authority (MCDA) if they are given a chance to be elected as senators.
Speaking during the Mega Cebu-sponsored candidates forum dubbed as “Klarohay Ta!” at the University of San Carlos (USC) main campus, senatorial candidates Gary Alejano of Otso Deretso and Conrado Generoso of the Katipunan Party said an MCDA law is necessary because Cebu needs a body to unify local government units in solving problems like traffic, flooding, river clean-up, livelihood and housing.
The MCDA bill has been pending at the House of Representatives during the 16th Congress (2014-2015) and at present 17th Congress (2016-2019) because it seems majority of the congressmen and senators are not interested on it.
Two years ago, Cebu congressmen led by Cebu Rep. Raul Del Mar (Cebu City, North) vowed to push for the creation of the MCDA.
Del Mar filed House Bill 6227 on the same year.
Aside from the MCDA issue, Alejano and Generoso also expressed opposition to the plan of the administration to release the names of politicians in the narco list because this may be used by administration candidates to destroy their political opponents.
Alejano and Generoso said it is unfair to release the narco-list when the persons concerned are not charged in court.
For senatorial hopefuls Evangeline Abejo and Richard Alfajora, they agreed to release the narco list so the voters will be guided.
They added the people in the community knew if the persons in the list are really on illegal drugs or not.
Alejano and Generoso also expressed opposition on the lowering of the Maximum Age of Criminal Responsibility (MACR) because children 15 years old and below needs guidance to become good citizens.
For their part, Abejo and Alfajora said MACR must be lowered because several children are being used by syndicates and other criminal groups to commit crimes. (EOB)
