Student robbed, dies in hospital

A 21-YEAR-OLD college student was shot dead by armed robbers onboard a motorcycle at Barangay Labangon, Cebu City on Friday night, March 29.

Though he only sustained a gunshot wound on his right leg, Jovanie Pat reportedly died at the Miller Adventist Hospital in Cebu City due to massive blood loss.

Police Major Keith Allen Andaya, chief of the Labangon Police Station, said that Pat was with his companion, Qunie Ruth Antivo, and were walking from the Bible Baptist Church in Katipunan Street when upon reaching Tres de Abril Street, they were suddenly approached by two men onboard a motorcycle.

One of the two men, identified as the backrider, suddenly pulled out a pistol and threatened the two victims on gunpoint.

The armed assailant then ordered Antivo to give up her bag but the latter refused.

When the assailant tried to grab Antivo’s bag, Pat attempted to get it back but he was instead shot in the leg.

The backrider then returned to his companion and sped away towards an unknown direction.

Operatives of the Mobile Patrol Group of the Cebu City Police Office (CCPO), who responded to the incident, immediately brought Pat to the Miller Adventist Hospital for medical attention.

But Pat reportedly died after the bullet hit a major vein on his leg.

Andaya believes that Pat may have died due to massive blood loss.

He said they already have a possible suspect behind the incident and they are currently tracing his identity through their rogues gallery.

Andaya is also closely coordinating with the intelligence community to help in locating the suspect who shot Pat.

The police are also coordinating with establishments near the crime scene to determine if a CCTV camera was able to record the assailants’ escape. (From AYB of Superbalita Cebu/JKV)
