Thai royalty visits Basilica

A MEMBER of Thailand’s royal family paid a visit to the Basilica Minore del Sto. Niño in Cebu City last Monday, June 3, 2019.

Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn, sister of King Vajiralongkorn, arrived with 57 royal guards.

Fr. Ric Anthony Reyes, the Basilica’s museum director, said the princess visited the Basilica as part of her history appreciation class.

Thailand is a predominantly Buddhist country.

“Her visit reminds us to appreciate our cultural history and our faith,” Reyes said in Cebuano.

Cebu will celebrate the 500th anniversary of Christianity’s arrival in the archipelago in 2021.

The princess’ itinerary included a visit to the museum, the chapel where the original icon of the Sto. Niño is kept and the room where the Ecce Homo artwork is housed.

She also visited the altar before making her way to the Pilgrim Center.

Her stroll took her and her retinue to the Magellan’s Cross where she posed for a picture outside the kiosk.

Her visit lasted around 70 minutes. (From PAC of SuperBalita Cebu, KAL)
