SEVERAL tombs in a public cemetery in Barangay Labangon, Cebu City collapsed Wednesday night, September 1, 2021.

The incident was discovered Thursday, September 2, said Cebu City Councilor Dave Tumulak.

Tumulak believes that the affected tombs were built using substandard materials.

He said one of the remains will be transferred to Calamba Cemetery, but the family has yet to be informed about it.

The public cemetery in Labangon was closed last August after the Cebu City Government received reports that bodies were secretly buried there at night.

Some families had complained that the bodies of their loved ones were exhumed even before the five-year mark, which is when bodies are considered safe to be removed from the burial ground, said Tumulak earlier.

He said the persons allegedly responsible for this are cemetery caretakers who were paid by the funeral parlor to dig up and bury the new bodies. (PAC/LMY)
