THE training of 24 policemen in Special Weapons and Tactics (Swat) to be based in Talisay City is expected to begin next week.

According to Police Lieutenant Randy Caballes, chief of Talisay City Police Station, the 24 policemen will be trained by Swat members from Camp Crame.

The two-month training will include firearms proficiency, responding to high risk situations, hostage taking, and robbery incidents.

"These Swat personnel are our elite personnel teams that will respond when there are alarms that require the assistance of our police," said Caballes.

The Talisay City Government has allocated P3 million for the training and equipment.

Caballes noted that in addition to the P3 million, the city administration will contribute additional funds for the trainees' needs once they begin working as elite personnel.

Talisay City Mayor Gerald Anthony "Samsam" Gullas also stated that the city should be able to employ elite staff due to its growing number of merchants.

If the peaceful environment is maintained, a city will grow and numerous enterprises will move in, according to Gullas.

The mayor’s only request to Caballes is that this first batch of trainees will remain in place for five to seven years before being transferred to another location in order for the government to recover their costs. (BBT/TPT)
