Transforming the daily commute in Metro Cebu: Cashless payments introduced for PeoplesJeep riders

COMMUTERS now have the option to pay without cash whenever they ride the over 200 PeoplesJeep units plying Metro Cebu.

PeoplesJeep, through its operator Cebu People’s Multi-Purpose Cooperative (CPMPC), partnered with digital bank Maya to introduce the RFID-enabled Maya PeoplesJeep card that commuters can use to pay their fares.

The partnership launch took place on Thursday, Sept. 21, 2023, in Cebu IT Park.

The card costs P150 and can be used to pay for fares for modern jeepneys plying routes in the cities of Mandaue, Cebu and Lapu-Lapu, as well as in Naga and Liloan.

Upon boarding a PeoplesJeep, a passenger assistance officer will enter the trip details on the point-of-sale (POS) device. The passenger will verify the details and tap their Maya PeoplesJeep cards on the POS, generating a receipt for each successful transaction.

Brian Yap, CPMPC president and chief executive officer, said, “The innovative card reflects Cebu’s commitment to adopting forward-thinking urban transportation solutions.”

“By merging cutting-edge cashless technology with a strong focus on passenger comfort, safety and environmental sustainability, this initiative is redefining urban mobility in the city,” he said.

Michael Abella, vice chairperson for transport of PeoplesJeep Transport Cooperative, described the adoption of the cashless payment system as a “game changer.”

He said the cashless payment system is secure and can provide a clear record of transactions, making it easier to resolve any disputes and discrepancies.

The Maya PeoplesJeep cards are available at the Cebu IT Park terminal, and users can easily top up their cards digitally through the GoodKredit App and soon directly within the Maya app.

Moreover, the partnership, according to Mariepeth Maison, assistant vice president for human resources and admin, benefits the coop’s members as the card also functions as an ATM card where users can deposit and withdraw.

“This also helps commuters track their spending and manage their budget more effectively, as well as save money by taking advantage of the system’s discounts and promotions,” she said.

Richard Labitag, Maya’s head of Acceptance and SME, said the cashless payment collection contributes significantly to the modernization of public transportation in the city.

He added it also brings all-in-one digital banking to the public, paving the way for improved financial inclusion.
