AN 86-YEAR-OLD pedestrian died after she was hit by a bundle of galvanized plain sheets that fell off a cargo truck on P. Sanchez Street in Barangay Canduman, Mandaue City, Cebu Sunday morning, February 5, 2023.
Authorities identified the fatality as Gregoria Cortes, a resident of Zone 6, Riverside, in Barangay Canduman.
The cargo truck driver was identified as Joel Estrella, 39, of Purok Loteral, Santa Cruz, in Liloan town, northern Cebu.
Initial investigation revealed that the victim was crossing the street when the galvanized plain sheets fell off the moving cargo truck.
The sheets hit the victim’s head and legs.
Jay Balabas, one of the responders, said it took them almost five minutes to remove the victim under the piled galvanized sheets.
The victim was rushed to a hospital for treatment, but she eventually died due to severe head injury, said Police Major Manuel Cabanlit, chief of the Mandaue City Police Office Station 6 in Barangay Canduman. (HIC)
