THE 33-year-old man who hacked to death his live-in partner and two minor children in the City of Naga, Cebu was arrested Monday afternoon, January 27, 2025, hours after committing the crime.

The suspect, identified as Carlo Camporedondo, 33, a native of Cabadbaran, Agusan del Norte, was nabbed after a manhunt operation launched by the City of Naga Police Station and barangay officials.

He was arrested in a nearby sitio after he fled from Purok Kamangahan in Barangay Lutac, City of Naga, Cebu.

He killed his live-in partner, Junelyn Jimenez, 32, and their two children -- 11-year-old John Carlo Camporedondo and two-year-old LJ -- around 10:30 a.m. Monday.

Police said Carlo was suffering from mental health issues due to illegal drug use.

Jessa Rico, Junelyn’s younger sister, said that after killing the victims, the suspect ran out of the house wielding a sharp bolo knife and attempted to attack their mother.

Fortunately, their mother managed to hide in a neighbor’s house.

"Pag gawas niya human niya gipanibas ang akong mga pag umangkon ug akong igsuon, si mama pud unta to iya sad patyon. Nakadagan man si mama, naka tago sa among silingan. Pag lugsong niya sa ubos, niana siya nga patay na," said Rico.

(When he came out after killing my nephews and my sister, he was going to kill my mother too, but she managed to run and hide at a neighbor’s house. When he went down the hill, he said they were all dead.)

Following the incident, the suspect fled toward the mountains, taking the bolo knife with him.

Rico said the 11-year-old victim was at home due to a toothache, while his seven-year-old sibling, who was in second grade, was the only one who went to school that day.

Carlo and his elder brother were supposed to sell coconuts Monday morning, but when they arrived at the center to pick up coconuts, they found the cart filled with broken husks, prompting them to go home early.

However, they were surprised when Carlo suddenly experienced a mental breakdown, which led to the tragic crime.

Last year, Carlo was reportedly admitted to the psychiatric ward of Vicente Sotto Memorial Medical Center after a severe episode. Since then, he had been prescribed maintenance medication for his condition, as he would often have sudden mood swings.

Despite his medication, Carlo reportedly continued using illegal drugs, which worsened his mental state.

"Bisan naa na siyay maintenance sa buang, mo take gihapon na siya og shabu sir ba, mao na sir," said Rico.

(Even though he was on maintenance medication, he still used shabu. That’s why this happened.)

She added that whenever Carlo's condition worsened, he would frequently argue with his partner and lash out at anyone nearby.

Neighbors confirmed that the couple often fought over unknown reasons. Just last week, one neighbor revealed that Carlo was seen under the influence of drugs and almost attacked him. (AYB/GPL)
