BARANGAY captains in Mandaue City have welcomed the newly signed law postponing the Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan Elections (BSKE), originally scheduled for December 1, 2025.
President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. signed on Wednesday, August 13, 2025, Republic Act 12232, or the Act Setting the Term of Office of Barangay Officials and Members of the Sangguniang Kabataan.
The law moves the next BSKE to the first Monday of November 2026 and every four years thereafter.
Marcos said the postponement would allow the government to focus on the upcoming parliamentary elections in the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (Barmm) this October.
Association of Barangay Councils (ABC) president Dante Borbajo of Barangay Canduman, Mandaue City, Cebu said the extension was well received by barangay officials, as it would allow them to continue programs and projects in their respective communities.
He called on all barangay leaders in Mandaue City to use the additional time to deliver honest and effective service and to make the most of the opportunity given to them.
Cambaro Barangay Captain Maricar Cañete also supported the decision, stressing that two years would have been too short for proper project implementation, as most initiatives follow planning done the previous year.
Barangay Opao Captain Nixon “Jojo” Dizon said they were ready for elections regardless of the date, but emphasized that their main priority remains public service.
Mantuyong Barangay Captain Julius Caesar Lumapas Areopagita said the extension brought no special advantage to incumbents and that operations in their barangay would continue as usual.
While most barangay leaders backed the postponement, some residents expressed disappointment.
A resident from Barangay Centro said she had been ready to vote this December and had hoped for a change in local leadership.
Others, like a voter from Inayawan, Cebu City, welcomed the delay, noting it would give unregistered family members more time to complete their voter registration.
The last BSKE was held on October 30, 2023. (CAV)
