NEWCOMER Steph “Pani” Maquiling delivered a stunning performance, overcoming cold hands and seasoned competitors to claim the coveted Bowler of the Week title in the Sugbuanon Bowlers United (SugBU) Weekly Sunday Shootout at SM Seaside Bowling Center on July 7, 2025.
Maquiling, a relative newbie competing in the Class C bracket, showcased remarkable composure in the final shootout, ultimately besting veteran bowlers Mel Fines and Maeng Viloria.
The championship match saw Maquiling start with “hands as cold as ice,” according to SugBU president Egay Alqueza, but she quickly found her rhythm midway through, converting crucial spares to build momentum.
Her clutch performance resulted in a winning score of 172 pinfalls. Fines finished closely behind with 167, while Maeng Viloria tallied 162.
Earlier in the tournament, Maquiling, Fines, and Viloria demonstrated their dominance by topping their respective divisions to secure their spots in the overall finals.
In Division A, Viloria led the pack with an impressive four-game aggregate of 859. Rene Ceniza secured second with 836, followed by Nestor Ranido with 804.
Division B saw Fines emerging victorious with an 829 total output. Aleson Flor was a close second with 821, and Feben Landazabal rounded out the top three with 808.
The Division C battle was comfortably won by Maquiling, who posted a strong 778. Bebie Mauro took second with 710, and Kianne Cesar placed third with 663. / SunStar Cebu
