What would you choose: a dream or an unexpected child? This is the central question explored in “Sunshine,” the new film featuring Visayan and Kapamilya actress Maris Racal.
Now showing in theaters, the film follows the story of a young gymnast preparing for national tryouts, only to face an unexpected pregnancy with her high school sweetheart.
On Thursday, July 24, 2025, SunStar Cebu attended the special screening of the movie at SM City Cebu, which was graced by Racal and director Antoinette Jadaone.
The film highlights the harsh realities of teenage pregnancy in the country—the judgment young women face and, more importantly, their determination to pursue their dreams despite unexpected challenges.
It also sheds light on cultural taboos, influenced by religion and societal expectations, that often leave women with little choice but to raise a child even when they are unprepared or struggling. Jadaone’s storytelling, paired with an honest portrayal of how communities don’t always follow the norm, gives the film depth and relatability.
It’s no surprise that “Sunshine” has received numerous international awards for its narrative. Racal’s raw beauty shines throughout the movie, appearing with minimal to no makeup in most scenes. Seasoned actor Piolo Pascual also makes a guest appearance in the film.
“Sunshine” is now showing in theaters nationwide and is rated 16. S
