MARKET vendors launched a cleanup on Tuesday, July 1, 2025, to improve sanitation at Carbon Market. The effort demonstrates their support for the new Cebu City administration and its goal of making Carbon the country's cleanest market.
The Carbon-Hanong Alyansa, alongside the Nestor Archival Rescue and Fire (NARF) Brigade, used high-pressure water hoses to clean sidewalks, streets, and drainage systems throughout Carbon Market.
Anne Ariosa, chairperson of the Carbon-Hanong Alyansa, explained the initiative shows their support for Mayor Archival.
"This is our way of supporting the new administration and showing that we vendors are committed to maintaining cleanliness in Carbon," Ariosa said in a phone interview with SunStar.
She added that the cleanup was a collective effort to address repeated complaints of flooding in parts of Carbon Market, including Manalili, Gonzalez, and Florida Street.
Ariosa also said the initiative responds to the public perception that vendors contribute to the market's uncleanliness.
"That’s not true, market vendors are committed to being part of the solution rather than the problem," she said.
The group plans weekly cleanups. This will encourage vendors to keep their stalls and surroundings clean daily and to follow proper waste disposal practices. Ariosa said a report will go to Mayor Archival to sustain the initiative.
She urged both vendors and customers to cooperate.
"We encourage vendors and customers not to litter, and we are proposing to the mayor to place more trash bins in the area to help manage waste properly," she said. (John Mart Mabalhin VSU Intern and Hilary Natalie Berongoy HNU Intern)
