AS FUN runs continue to rise in popularity across Cebu City, Mayor Nestor Archival encouraged the adoption of more eco-conscious guidelines in future events.
Alarmed by the growing volume of plastic waste -- particularly from single-use water bottles -- left behind after these events, the mayor called for a shift toward sustainable practices.
In an interview on Monday, July 21, 2025, Archival expressed concern over the environmental impact of these events.
“Even if I don’t join the run, I often join the opening or closing activities, and I can really see the amount of plastic garbage and bottled water scattered everywhere,” he said.
To address the problem, he urged event organizers to adopt greener alternatives, such as setting up water refilling stations and using paper cups or lightweight reusable tumblers.
“Though, if they really need to give something out, maybe they can use paper cups or those lightweight reusable tumblers -- they’re not that expensive or heavy anyway,” he said. “There should be designated refill zones instead of handing out disposable plastic bottles.”
The mayor also underscored the need for thorough aftercare protocols, pointing out that improperly discarded waste often ends up polluting rivers and coastlines.
“If organizers distribute bottled drinks, they must ensure proper collection and disposal. Waste should be gathered in one area and kept from reaching our waterways,” he added.
In response to this recurring issue, Archival proposed the inclusion of environmental safeguards as a requirement in the issuance of event permits.
These protocols would ensure that organizers are not only promoting physical wellness but also taking responsibility for environmental sustainability. (Reydante Tinapay, HNU intern)
