CEBU-BASED Metro Retail Stores Group Inc. (MRSGI) is bolstering its commitment to local farmers and sustainability through an enhanced partnership with Gulay Farmers, a Cebu-based non-government organization, connecting small-scale producers to major retailers.
The initiative provides 500 farmers direct access to MRSGI’s “Q” brand fresh produce sections in eight Cebu stores, ensuring fair pricing, market stability and improved livelihoods since its 2020 launch.
This collaboration streamlines the supply chain, overcoming hurdles like documentation and volatile markets, enabling farmers to earn more and invest in their farms.
Gulay Farmers representative Don Jureidini lauded the consistent market provided by
Metro Retail.
“Metro Retail has provided security and stability to farmers by giving them a consistent and reliable market,” said Jureidini. “Before, many small producers struggled to find buyers or had to rely on middlemen who dictated prices. Now, they have direct access to a trusted retailer, allowing them to reinvest in their farms and plan for the future.”
MRSGI president and chief operating officer Manuel Alberto emphasized the initiative’s alignment with their farm-to-market strategy, offering fresher produce and fair compensation while supporting local agriculture through direct sourcing and training programs.
“This initiative is part of Metro Retail’s commitment to supporting local farmers while providing customers with fresh, high-quality produce at better prices,” said Alberto. “By working closely with cooperatives like Gulay Farmers, we help strengthen agricultural livelihoods and promote a more sustainable retail ecosystem.”
Looking ahead, MRSGI and Gulay Farmers aim to expand the program beyond Cebu, strengthening supply chain efficiency and farmer support to help more farmers and communities access formal retail markets.
Metro Retail operates a total of 71 branches across Luzon and the Visayas under the store formats Metro Supermarket, Metro Department Store, Super Metro Hypermarket, Metro Value Mart and Metro Home
