THE Cebu Port Authority (CPA) has deployed 23 K9 units to strengthen security measures across all Cebu ports.
This, as the country prepares for Holy Week and the long hot summer ahead that is expected to draw an influx of passengers.
In a statement released on Friday, April 11, 2025, the CPA announced that all ports in Cebu will be under heightened alert from April 13 to 20, as part of the nationwide implementation of “Oplan Biyaheng Ayos: Holy Week and Summer Vacation 2025,” that is led by the Department of Transportation.
“To strengthen security, the CPA has developed its own 23 K9 units,” read a portion of the announcement posted on the agency’s Facebook page.
The CPA’s decision to independently finance its K9 units is aimed at bolstering port security, particularly during significant national holidays and major gatherings.
The K9 units are composed of Explosive Detection Dogs and Narcotics Detection Dogs that will be used to conduct routine inspections to prevent the entry of illegal substances and ensure passenger safety within port premises.
CPA general manager Francisco Comendador III stressed the importance of maintaining security during peak travel seasons.
He said the CPA Operations Center will be open 24/7 to monitor concerns and respond to emergencies.
In addition to the K9 deployment, more than 400 port police and security personnel have been mobilized, while two patrol boats will be stationed at the Cebu Baseport to monitor activities in waterside areas.
To reinforce port security, the CPA is working in coordination with the Philippine Coast Guard, Maritime Industry Authority, Philippine National Police and Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency.
Comendador reminded passengers to plan their trips ahead, arrive early at ports and avoid buying tickets from unauthorized sellers.
The CPA will be strictly enforcing a “No Ticket, No ID, No Entry” policy for better crowd control.
Malasakit Help Desks and first-aid stations will also be activated in passenger terminals to assist travelers and respond to emergencies. / CDF
