THE National Bureau of Investigation in Central Visayas (NBI 7) Regional Office seized 228 bales of imported used clothing, commonly known as “ukay-ukay,” worth P752,400 in a raid conducted in Barangay Kalubihan, Cebu City on February 20, 2025.

NBI 7 Director Rennan Augustus Oliva, in a press conference on Wednesday, February 26, told reporters the occupants of the establishment failed to present permits or licenses to import the seized items.

Authorities identified the establishment as GZ RTW Trading, owned by Bea Zheng Ty, which allegedly imported second-hand clothing from South Korea.

Oliva said the act violated Republic Act No. 4653, which prohibits the commercial importation of used clothing to safeguard public health and maintain national dignity.

On Tuesday, February 25, the NBI formally filed a case against Ty before the Cebu City Prosecutor’s Office.

Oliva said authorities are continuing their investigation, suspecting a larger smuggling network behind the illegal importation.

The NBI 7 is also looking into the possibility that the same method is being used to smuggle other contraband, including illegal drugs and uranium illegally smuggled in Mandaue City.

He advised the public to stay vigilant. (DPC)
