MALACAÑANG declared a special non-working holiday in Lapu-Lapu City on Tuesday, June 17, 2025, as the local government unit celebrates its 64th Charter Day.

The Office of the President issued Proclamation 897, which states that it is “fitting and proper that the people of the City of Lapu-Lapu be given full opportunity to participate in the occasion and enjoy the celebration.”

Executive Secretary Lucas Bersamin signed the proclamation by the authority of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. last May 9.

The celebration’s theme is “Unity and Resilience through CHANge: Honoring Lapu-Lapu City’s Legacy.” The event will be held at the Hoopsdome from 8 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. It will feature an honoring ceremony and messages from outgoing Mayor and Congressman-elect Junard “Ahong” Chan and his wife, incoming mayor and outgoing Congresswoman Ma. Cynthia “Cindi” King-Chan.

Scheduled activities include a job fair on Tuesday.

Lapu-Lapu was created as a chartered city through Republic Act 3134, also known as the Act Creating the City of Lapu-Lapu, which was signed by then President Carlos P. Garcia on June 17, 1961.

The city was formerly the Municipality of Opon but was renamed to honor Datu Lapulapu, the local chieftain who defeated Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan. Today, residents of Lapu-Lapu are still referred to as “Oponganons.” / NECOLYN CLAIRE BALANSAG, CNU INTERN
