THE Immaculate Conception Parish of Oslob, southern Cebu, has officially become an affiliate church of the Papal Basilica of Saint Mary Major in Rome.
The announcement was made on Thursday, April 10, 2025.
The esteemed designation formalizes a spiritual connection between the local parish and one of the four major basilicas in Rome dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary.
The Papal Basilica of Saint Mary Major, with its origins tracing back to the fifth century, is historically significant as the first church in Rome dedicated to the Virgin Mary.
It is also known as a frequent place of prayer for Pope Francis.
The spiritual affinity between the Oslob Parish and the Roman basilica stems from their shared devotion to the Blessed Mother.
As an affiliate, parishioners and pilgrims of the Oslob church will now participate in the liturgical celebrations and devotional practices of the Papal Basilica.
The petition for affiliation, the first of its kind for a church in Cebu, was initiated by Rev. Fr. Jonald Concha, parish priest of the Immaculate Conception Parish.
The petition received the endorsement of Cebu Archbishop Jose Palma and was personally delivered to the Apostolic Nunciature in Manila by National Historical Commission of the Philippines staff Christian Bonpua.
The affiliation was granted by the Archpriest of the Papal Basilica, taking effect on March 4.
“We are overjoyed and grateful for this recognition,” said Fr. Concha upon hearing news of the development.
“This affiliation is a blessing for our parish and a reminder of our shared commitment to spreading the Gospel and serving our community,” he said.
The Oslob parish anticipates that the affiliation will strengthen its ties with the global Catholic community and deepen devotion to Mother Mary among its members.
Plans for upcoming events and celebrations to mark this milestone will be announced in the near future. (PR)
