MORE than 300 students under the government’s Alternative Learning System (ALS) completed the program, graduating on Wednesday, July 2, 2025, at the Hoops Dome in Lapu-Lapu City.

The event marked a new beginning for graduates, comprised of elementary and junior high school finishers, and a chance to pursue their passions to make dreams a reality.

Among them is Nanay Marilyn Layug, a 63-year old resident of Barangay Basak, who proved that it’s never too late to achieve one’s dreams.

In a Facebook post, Rep. Junard “Ahong” Chan praised Layug for graduating from ALS Junior High School.

“Inspiration”

“She serves as an inspiration to everyone that it’s never too late. If success is in your heart, you can truly achieve it, no matter your situation,” Chan said.

Meanwhile, Councilor Annabeth Cuizon, chairperson of the committee on social services, senior citizens and PWDs, said Lapu-Lapu City is committed to make education accessible, especially for out-of-school youth and adult learners.

“Education is the key to success and we are committed to ensuring that every learner, regardless of age or background, is supported in their journey,” Cuizon said.

The ALS is a parallel learning system that provides an alternative pathway for out-of-school youth and adults who were unable to complete basic education through the formal school system. / Yvon Maratas, Benedicto College Intern.
