AT LEAST 1,000 balikbayans and visitors arrived in Cebu on Thursday morning, January 16, 2025, to join the 460th Fiesta Señor festivities.
The Department of Tourism (DOT) expressed optimism about the positive impact of the Sinulog season in boosting tourist arrivals.
Among the arrivals was 50-year-old Raymund Deligero, who returned to Cebu after nearly 20 years to honor the Santo Niño.
Deligero shared that his deep devotion to the Holy Child stems from a life-changing experience -- his fervent prayers during a battle with colon cancer led to his recovery.
“I prayed the nine novena masses to the Santo Niño, and I believe that was the miracle that healed me,” said Deligero, who has been cancer-free since 2001.
Now residing in California, USA, he looks forward to visiting the Basilica Minore del Santo Niño de Cebu and participating in the festivities.
Chris Maynard, a first-time visitor from Washington, USA, also arrived on Thursday.
In a separate interview, he shared his excitement and gratitude for the warm welcome he received at Mactan-Cebu International Airport (MCIA).
“This is amazing and totally unexpected. It reminds me of a great experience that I had when I went and visited Hawaii many years ago. I felt very welcomed,” said Maynard.
He added that during his stay, he hopes for beautiful weather, friendly people, great food, good music, and the opportunity to explore everything Cebu has to offer, with hopes of returning in the future.
DOT Central Visayas Director Judy dela Cruz Gabato said that Cebu’s tourism is thriving during the Sinulog festival, with hotel occupancy rates ranging from 80 percent to 100 percent.
Gabato emphasized the importance of the Balik Cebu program, which celebrates Cebu’s cultural tradition by warmly welcoming balikbayans and tourists, often with tokens like necklaces.
According to MCIA, a total of 1,027 balikbayans and tourists have arrived under the Balik Cebu program. (DPC)
