STUDENTS in Cebu are expected to be greeted by generally fair weather when classes officially start on June 16, 2025.
The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) on Tuesday, June 10, said a tropical depression previously monitored outside the Philippine Area of Responsibility (Par) is now on its way out, assuring a clearer week ahead.
Pagasa Visayas weather specialist Jhomer Eclarino announced during a news forum on Tuesday, June 10, that while a low-pressure area (LPA) affecting Central Visayas brought heavy rains and flooding in Metro Cebu last week, significant downpours and thunderstorms are only expected until Wednesday, June 11.
“It will be sunny again on Thursday and the weather will be much improved,” Eclarino said in Cebuano, assuring warmer and clearer conditions in the coming days, particularly during the opening of classes in public schools, nationwide, for School Year 2025-2026.
Meanwhile, during the same forum, Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (PDRRMO) spokesperson Wilson Ramos said their office consistently monitors local government units (LGUs) and conducts pre-rainy season clearing operations in drainages.
However, these efforts are often undermined by improper waste disposal.
“No matter how hard we try to remove silt from canals, if the public just keeps on throwing trash everywhere, it won’t be any use,” Ramos said in Cebuano.
Ramos called on the public to be accountable for their wastes to prevent clogged waterways and flash floods.
The PDRRMO is currently monitoring areas prone to landslides and flash floods, focusing on the town of Balamban and other areas in Central Cebu.
Ramos said LGUs are equipped with high-frequency communication devices to ensure the continuous flow of information during calamities. / Divine Grace Bendanillo, CNU-Main intern
