If I could credit one trait that helped me get to where I am today, it would be self-discipline.

Not talent. Not luck. Not intelligence. Not money because I started with nothing.

Self-discipline.

It’s the quiet force that has helped me get up at dawn everyday, stick to routines and push through when motivation fades. It’s what helped me start strong and finish what I started.

Looking back, I can see how self-discipline shaped every stage of my life. As a young insurance agent in Bacolod City, it meant making calls even when I was tired, showing up even when I didn’t feel like it and constantly learning even when it was easier to relax. That discipline built my career in sales and later, our family business.

When I became an entrepreneur at age 50, self-discipline became even more crucial. There were no bosses. No time cards to punch. No one to monitor progress but myself. And that’s when I realized: the toughest part of building a business isn’t the work; it’s managing yourself.

Discipline helped me focus on what mattered most. It helped me delay gratification. While others splurged, I reinvested. While others slept, I was on the grind. It wasn’t about being a workaholic; it was about staying consistent.

Even in my personal life, self-discipline played a huge role. It shaped my health habits, how I spend money, and how I protect my time. At my age, I still follow a daily routine. I read. I monitor my thoughts. I exercise. I watch my diet, weight and what my body tells me. I avoid shortcuts, because I know they come at a cost.

Of course, I’m far from perfect. I’ve had moments of distraction and lapses in judgment. But discipline has always brought me back. It’s the inner compass that reminds me: keep going, Bunny, stay focused, don’t quit. Who else would do this thing but you?

People often look for hacks, secrets, or shortcuts to success. But here’s the truth: it’s self-discipline. It’s doing what needs to be done, especially when you don’t feel like doing it. It’s saying no to what’s convenient or easy so you can say yes to what’s important.

Discipline isn’t just about control. It’s about freedom; the freedom to live on your terms because you’ve done the hard things first.

It may not look exciting. But over time, it changes everything.
