Pages: Rediscovering Cebu after all these years

I’ve traveled the world over the past three decades. As of last count, I’ve visited more than 100 countries and cities. I’ve strolled the cobbled streets of Paris, immersed myself in the culture of Japan, marveled at the Alps of Switzerland, and stayed in some of the finest resorts on the planet — from the timeless elegance of Europe to the tropical allure of Bali.

And yet, here’s the irony: I’ve hardly explored the world-class resorts in my own backyard—right here in Cebu.

Yes, the very same resorts that attract local and international tourists year-round. Some guests book months in advance just to spend a weekend in these havens. And I, who live less than an hour away, never truly gave them the time.

Until this year.

Starting in April, I made a quiet commitment to myself: take two days off every month to unwind and rediscover Cebu. No flights. No airport stress. Just a short drive, a warm welcome and a chance to appreciate what I’ve long taken for granted.

In April, we stayed at Maribago Bluewater — laid-back, rustic and proudly Filipino. In May, it was Shangri-La Mactan, a timeless favorite for both families and honeymooners. In June, we checked into Crimson Resort and Spa, where the service was superb and the sunset felt almost spiritual.

And there’s more to come. On my list are Jpark Island Resort, BE Resort, Tambuli, The Reef, Sheraton, Dusit Thani, Plantation Bay, Costabella, Mövenpick and Cebu White Sands.

Each two-night stay costs around P30,000 — a fraction of what international trips demand. But the experience? Absolutely priceless. No jet lag. No packing frenzy. Just time to rest, reflect and reconnect.

This personal project has opened my eyes. The comfort, beauty and peace I once chased abroad were here all along. I simply wasn’t paying attention.

To my fellow Cebuanos: I know we’re all busy. But maybe it’s time we experienced Cebu the way our visitors do—with wonder, pride and fresh eyes. Let’s not wait for retirement, burnout or a wake-up call to enjoy what we already have.

So here’s my humble advice: take a break. Stay two nights. Start with just one resort. Let Cebu surprise you.

You don’t need to fly to Bali or Barcelona to feel renewed. Sometimes, paradise is just around the corner where you already are.

You just have to slow down — and rediscover it.
