Pages: You can’t delegate leadership

Leadership isn’t something you assign—it’s something you live.

You can delegate operations. You can delegate execution. You can even delegate strategy. But leadership? That’s different. Leadership is presence, direction and accountability all rolled into one. It means showing up, speaking up and stepping up — especially when it matters most.

1. Presence is power

A leader’s presence goes beyond just being physically there. It’s emotional and psychological. When leaders are visible and engaged, they provide stability and confidence. When they’re absent, the void is felt immediately. No title or system can fill it. That vacuum leads to confusion, disengagement and a drop in morale.

Until the day I retire from our family business, I’ll make sure to be present — at store openings, key meetings and even casual frontline conversations. That consistency would remind people they mattered — and me knowing what was really happening on the ground.

2. The tone starts at the top

Culture is shaped by what the leader rewards, tolerates and models. If you’re not there to set the tone, someone else will — and you might not like the outcome. Delegating leadership means risking your vision, your values and your voice.

Leadership doesn’t mean micromanaging. It means showing others how to behave by how you behave. It means being involved in what matters.

3. People follow a person, not a plan

At the end of the day, people want to follow someone they trust. Someone who’s committed, focused and emotionally invested.

When the leader is engaged, the team aligns. Accountability rises. Execution improves. You can’t outsource that kind of influence. You have to live it.

So no matter how strong your systems are, how talented your team is, or how clear your strategy may be, remember: Leadership isn’t a job you pass on. It’s a responsibility you live every single day. Because you can’t delegate leadership.
