THE Philippine coffee industry experienced robust growth in the first quarter of 2025, as production and farmgate prices of green coffee beans surged significantly, according to the latest report released by the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA).

From January to March 2025, total coffee production reached 13,057.64 metric tons, marking a 10.7 percent year-on-year increase, reflecting the sustained recovery and resilience of the country’s coffee farming sector.

Leading the price surge was Robusta coffee, with its average farmgate price climbing to P265.75 per kilogram, up 133.7 percent from the same period last year. PSA highlighted this figure as the highest quarterly price for Robusta coffee since 2015.

Other varieties also posted notable price gains. Arabica fetched an average of P290.97 per kilogram, increasing 64.1 percent, while Liberica rose to P183.33 per kilogram, representing a 57.1 percent hike.

The significant rise in farmgate prices is seen as a boon to local coffee farmers, who stand to benefit from higher income margins amid growing demand for Philippine-grown beans. Market analysts attribute the price increases to both domestic supply-demand dynamics and global coffee price trends.

As the Philippines continues to strengthen its position in the regional coffee market, industry stakeholders are optimistic that further investments in farming technology, sustainability practices and farmer training will drive long-term growth and competitiveness. / KOC
