NEWS websites can now apply for membership in the Philippine Press Institute (PPI), the national association of newspapers since 1964.
During its 2025 General Assembly at Eastwood Richmonde Hotel, members unanimously approved an amendment to the membership provision in its bylaws, changing the categories from Regular and Associate to Print and Online.
“A bold move on the part of the PPI to be not just relevant but more inclusive,” said the PPI board, which presented the redefinition of membership to the body.
PPI Chairman and President Rolando Estabillo added that the media landscape has changed drastically and that the institute cannot afford to be parochial or passive.
In his privilege speech during this year’s assembly, re-elected Visayas trustee and corporate secretary Lawyer Ruevivar Reyes emphasized the need to recalibrate the organization’s direction.
“We’ve done a lot of introspection already. The PPI News Commons, as such, is a bold move—a result of our collective aspiration and commitment,” he said.
Launched in 2019, the PPI News Commons is an online news-sharing and aggregation platform that supports PPI’s member publications, especially those without their own digital presence.
It curates content from nearly 70 community newspapers nationwide, helping local journalism reach a broader audience and sustain its relevance in the digital age.
The PPI will submit the amendment to its Articles of Incorporation and bylaws to the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) in the coming days. (PR)
