ALIGNED with his advocacy to reduce plastic waste, Cebu City Mayor Nestor Archival has announced plans to install public drinking fountains across the city as part of his first 100 days in office.
Archival revealed the initiative in a sideline interview during a waste sorting seminar on Saturday, July 5, 2025. The seminar was a project of Junior Chamber International (JCI) Japan in partnership with Barangay Luz.
Archival’s plan aims to provide clean and accessible drinking water in key public areas, thereby encouraging residents to use reusable tumblers. This directly supports the mayor’s broader environmental campaign.
“We are going to install drinkable water in areas where there are a lot of common public spaces,” Archival said. “People will refill [their tumblers], they will bring a tumbler and they will directly put it in.”
Archival believes that even a single installation would signal progress in reducing plastic waste and fostering sustainability.
“This is something that the people will understand — that the City Government is taking care of society and at the same time taking care of the environment,” he added.
The event Archival attended, themed “Clean Communities Start with Us: Proper Sorting for a Greener Future,” aimed to raise awareness about responsible waste management. It was jointly organized by JCI Japan, JCI Cebu, Guun Co. Ltd. and the Barangay Luz Council. / CDF
