WHILE Cebu and the rest of Central Visayas can expect generally fair weather next week, the country is now in a transitional period leading to the rainy season, which is expected to begin in the second half of June.
Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) Visayas weather specialist Jomer Eclarino said Sunday, May 25, 2025, that although Cebu will temporarily return to hot and humid conditions for next week, the presence of isolated rainshowers and localized thunderstorms will continue due to the lingering effects of the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ).
“Transition period pa ta padulong rainy season, and we’re looking at the official onset by the second half of June,” Eclarino said in a phone interview.
“For now, expect ta og init ug igang nga panahon, but occasional thunderstorms can still occur,” he added.
The ITCZ, which brings converging winds from the northern and southern hemispheres, is responsible for recent sudden rains and will continue to affect weather patterns across the Visayas and Mindanao.
In Cebu, the heat index has slightly decreased to 38 to 39 degrees Celsius, down from the previous week’s 40 degree Celsius but still falls under the “extreme caution” category.
Actual air temperature ranges from 27 to 30 degrees Celsius.
Eclarino reminded the public to monitor official advisories as localized thunderstorms may bring sudden, heavy rainfall that could trigger flash floods or landslides, particularly in low-lying or mountainous areas.
“Continue to take precautions against both the heat and potential severe thunderstorms. Stay hydrated and bring protection from the sun,” he said.
Pagasa’s national 4 a.m. advisory also reported continued cloudiness with scattered rainshowers and thunderstorms over the Visayas, Northern Mindanao, Caraga, Davao Region, Zamboanga Peninsula, Mimaropa, and parts of Bicol Region.
These conditions are consistent with the transition toward the wet season. (CDF)
