Remains of OFW couple killed in Myanmar quake arrive in Negros Oriental

THE cremated remains of a Filipino couple who died in the magnitude 7.7 earthquake in Myanmar arrived in Negros Oriental on Sunday, May 25, 2025.

Edsil Jess Agan Adalid and Alexis Gale Concepcion Adalid, both music teachers from Bais City, were received by family members and representatives at the Dumaguete-Sibulan Airport, according to the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration in Central Visayas (OWWA 7).

The couple were among four Filipinos killed in the March 28 quake in Myanmar. Their bodies were recovered nearly a month later. The remains were brought to the St. Nicholas of Tolentino Parish Pastoral Care in Bais City for interment.

OWWA 7 provided airport assistance and coordinated with the Bais City government, which provided transportation for the family.

The repatriation was part of a coordinated effort by various government agencies, including the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA), Philippine Embassy in Yangon, Department of Migrant Workers (DMW), and the Migrant Workers Office in Bangkok.

According to OWWA. the Philippine Embassy in Yangon paid for the cremation while the DMW paid for the travel of the couple’s relatives from Dumaguete to Myanmar. OWWA covered their return flights.

The surviving family will receive death, burial, and livelihood benefits from OWWA.

Dineza Z. Gelle, OWWA 7 Programs and Services Division Officer-in-Charge, led the team assisting with the repatriation alongside staff members Mylah Joy Corag and Vince Anthony Mijares. Local officials from Bais City attended the arrival. (CDF)
