A 59-YEAR-OLD motorcycle rider remains in critical condition after allegedly beating the red light and colliding with another motorcycle at the intersection of P. Del Rosario and Junquera streets in Barangay San Antonio, Cebu City, at around 8:58 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 21, 2026.
The unconscious rider, identified as Segundo Butaya, 59, a resident of Catarman, Liloan, was driving a Honda Click and was brought to the Cebu City Medical Center (CCMC).
His 18-year-old back rider, Warren Tudlas, a native of Ginatilan, sustained minor injuries. The driver of the Yamaha Mio that Butaya collided with, identified as Richard Gabrillo, 50, of Sitio Ipil, Barangay Basak San Nicolas, also sustained minor injuries.
Based on the investigation by the Traffic Enforcement Unit of the Cebu City Police Office and footage from the Cebu City Government's Eagle Eye, Gabrillo's motorcycle had stopped because the traffic signal on Junquera Street toward the downtown area was red.
When the signal turned green, indicating that vehicles could proceed, Gabrillo started moving.
However, Butaya, who was traveling at high speed along P. Del Rosario Street toward the South Bus Terminal, allegedly continued through the intersection despite the red light, resulting in a collision.
The impact caused both motorcycles to topple over, throwing their riders onto the concrete road.
When medical personnel from the Cebu City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office arrived, Butaya was already unconscious. He was immediately brought to CCMC. (AYB)
