Ruby Ibarra wins NPR's Tiny Desk Contest

When Olivia Rodrigo graced NPR’s Tiny Desk Concert in 2021, Filipinos everywhere felt the pride ripple across the internet. Seeing a global pop star with Filipino roots in that stripped-down, intimate space was a win.

But on May 29, 2025, Ruby Ibarra — Filipina immigrant, rapper, poet and cultural trailblazer — wore a bold “I love Pinays” shirt and declared, “Being human is not illegal.” If Olivia made us proud, Ruby made us feel seen.

Launched in 2008 by National Public Radio in Washington, D.C., Tiny Desk has hosted intimate live sets from some of the world’s most influential artists. Each year, its Tiny Desk Contest picks just one winner from thousands of entries. In 2025, that winner is Ruby Ibarra, marking the first time a “fully Filipino” artist has taken the spotlight, according to Billboard Philippines.

Out of more than 7,500 entries, Ibarra’s “Bakunawa” — a track inspired by Philippine mythology and the birth of her first child — rose to the top. NPR judge Bobby Carter praised her authenticity and the emotional depth of her performance, while Robin Hilton called it “startling and unforgettable.” Ayana Contreras noted how Ibarra’s sound speaks to second-generation immigrants who reshape tradition without losing it.

Backed by an all-Filipina band, Ibarra performed “Bakunawa,” “7000 Miles” and “Someday” during her 20-minute set. Switching between English, Tagalog and Waray, she told stories of diaspora and resilience through her signature blend of hip-hop and live instrumentation. “Being human is not illegal,” she said between songs. “And this immigrant is here.”

Born in Tacloban and raised in the Bay Area, Ibarra is a storyteller. NPR’s Felix Contreras said, “Ruby is blazing a trail with a sound more people need to hear.” Raina Douris added she was “captivated by the complexity and intensity of her performance.”

Ruby Ibarra’s Tiny Desk debut is a win for every Filipino who’s ever looked for themselves in music.
