THE Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) Visayas reports that the region is experiencing a “monsoon break,” leading to several days of hot and dry weather.
In a phone interview with SunStar Cebu on Monday, Aug. 4, 2025, Pagasa Visayas weather specialist Janina Marte said the intense heat is a direct result of this phenomenon.
A monsoon break is a weakening or recession of the southwest monsoon, which causes a period of reduced rainfall or a dry spell, often with hot and dry conditions.
Marte explained that while the southwest monsoon is bringing rain to Northern Luzon, the Visayas region is currently in a monsoon break.
“Since we are in a monsoon break, we can expect hot weather and a high heat index,” she said in Cebuano. “Let’s not forget to stay hydrated and bring an umbrella.”
The effects of the monsoon break are expected to last until Tuesday, Aug. 5, with a moderate to high chance of isolated thunderstorms in the afternoon and evening.
The heat index is forecast to reach between 38 and 40 degrees Celsius in the coming days.
This recent heat wave follows several days of heavy rain in July, when two to three tropical cyclones entered the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR).
As of 8 a.m. on Aug. 4, a low-pressure area was being monitored outside the PAR, with a low chance of developing into a tropical storm within the next 24 hours.
Marte urged the public to stay updated by following official advisories from the weather bureau, which is closely monitoring the situation. (DPC)
