Ancajas loses to Martinez anew

JERWIN Ancajas failed to reclaim the International Boxing Federation (IBF) super flyweight strap after a unanimous decision loss to Fernando Martinez in their rematch Sunday (PH time), Oct. 9, 2022, at the Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson, California.

Just like in the first fight, the match was all-out action.

The 30-year-old Ancajas had a strong start and fought technically, keeping the fight at a distance by using his jab.

In the sixth round, Martinez started to heat up and landed some of his power punches.

Martinez turned it into a brawl in the following round as Ancajas was willing to trade inside. Ancajas suffered a gash on his forehead in round seven after an accidental clash of heads.

In the eighth round, the 31-year-old Martinez continued to put pressure on Ancajas and it was very effective as the Filipino star was starting to lose steam.

Martinez continued his frenetic pace and smothered Ancajas.

Sensing that he was down on the scorecards, Ancajas picked his punches in the final round and was looking for a knockout, which never came.

Judge Ellis Johnson scored 119-109, while judges Tiffany Clinton and Zachary Young had identical scores of 118-110.

Ancajas suffered his second straight loss, both in the hands of Martinez. He dropped to 33-3-2 with 22 knockouts.

Martinez made his first successful title defense and remained unbeaten with 15-0 and eight knockouts.

On the other hand, Olympic bronze medalist Eumir Marcial scored a lopsided unanimous decision over Steven Pichardo despite a cut in the second round.

All three judges scored it with identical 60-54 scores.

Marcial is now 3-0 with a knockout, while Pichardo dropped to 8-3-1 with two knockouts.
