Cebu International Jiu-Jitsu Competition on March 4-5

The Cebu International Open Jiu-Jitsu Championship 2023, under the Asian Sport Jiu-Jitsu Federation, will have its most anticipated tournament for the Asian-ranking competition.

For this year’s competition, the federation aims to cater to over 300 or more competitors who will compete for the jiu-jitsu ranking in Asia.

“Since 2015, based on the previous competitions of Asian Sport Jiu-Jitsu Federation, most of our competitors will reach 300 or even more from all over the Philippines, some even parts of Asia, some parts of the US,” said Jason Mondigo ASJJF Head/ Philippines, Cebu, one of the board of directors.

Competitors who will finalize in participating the competition will be categorized based on their team, belt color, specific age, and weight brackets. As young as the ages of four to 60 years old, the competition is open to anyone who has the experience and mastery for jiu-jitsu sportsmanship.

In contrast, this competition will also serve as a new foundation to preserve the artistry behind jiu-jitsu’s history and mechanics, while unlocking new opportunities for talents that are new in the field.

“The primary goal of the ASJJF is to unify and organize existing Sport Jiu-Jitsu, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, and Jiu-Jitsu National and/or territorial federations that share the vision of reaching olympic greatness while preserving the unique history, culture, philosophy, and lineage of our sport,” according to Edison Kagohara, the ASJJF director.

Along with the competition, competitors will be ranked based on two types: fighter rank and team rank. Both ranks are composed of bronze, silver, and gold elo. After the competition, the ranks are distributed towards each category for the conclusion of the Asian Jiu-Jitsu leaderboard that will be titled for a whole-year round.

“By ranking, let’s say you rank first in the White Belt category, then it’s going to happen all-year round. At the end of the year, that’s the time that your score will be tallied per rank for each athlete or per team,” Mondigo specified.

The competition will be on March 4 and 5 at the Robinson’s Galleria Cebu for the whole day. Admission is free for public viewers.
