Cebuano seeks title defense against ex-youth champion

CEBUANO banger Joe Noynay will defend his Philippine welterweight belt against former World Boxing Council youth champion Argie Toquero on Saturday, Oct. 7, 2023, in the co-headliner of “Night of Champions 30” at the Grand Ballroom of the Elorde Sports Center in Parañaque City.

The 28-year-old Noynay is defending the title for the first time after winning it last year with a unanimous decision over Adam Diu Abdulhamid in Mandaluyong City.

The Bogo City native also won the International Boxing Federation Pan Pacific welterweight belt with a fourth-round technical knockout of Larry Siwu in Parañaque City last June 17.

Toquero is looking to break a two-fight slump after dropping his last contests. He lost to Rodel Wenceslao in Cebu last year, while he lost to unbeaten Faizan Anwar in Dubai last July 22.

Noynay is 21-3-2 with nine knockouts, while Toquero is 13-7-3 with 10 knockouts.

In the main event, experienced Roldan Aldea will trade leather with Japanese Masahiro Suzuki for the vacant Oriental and Pacific Boxing Federation lightweight belt.

Aldea won in unanimous decision against former Manny Pacquiao sparring partner Leonardo Doronio in his last fight last April 22 in Parañaque City.

Suzuki demolished former world champion Panya Uthok by a second-round knockout in his last fight last April 18 in Japan.

Aldea is 18-9-1 with 10 knockouts, while Suzuki is 9-1 with six knockouts.

In the undercard, Hawaiian Alejandro Patrick Meniano (1-1) will be up against newcomer Dennis Malavega, journeyman Mateo Handig (16-24, 10 KOs) will lock horns with Rodel Sunquit (5-12-1, 1 KO), Archiel Villamor (4-0, 2 KOs) will fight Nilo Entero (4-1-2), Harry Omac (6-2-1, 2 KOs) will slug it out with Juanito Hondante (4-13, 3 KOs), Luis Borje (5-3-3, 2 KOs) will square off with Mark Jequinto (4-13-1) and Herovan Beltran (1-1) will open up the show against Paul Alera (1-0-1).
