BEFORE the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (Cesafi) regular season formally opens, the men behind the whistle took a two-day refresher course at the University of San Carlos main gym.

The refresher course, which concluded on Monday, Aug. 26, 2019, was headed by veteran referee Romy Guevarra together with Manila’s referee Ian Borbe.

“We are doing this in preparation for the upcoming regular season. In fact, we have invited the coaches of every school to attend the course so they can be taught with the referees. At least during the course, the coaches can ask if they have questions to the seminar personnel,” Cesafi commissioner Felix “Boy” Tiukinhoy Jr.

The refresher course was attended by about 70 referees, including visitors from Dumaguete City and Ormoc City.

“We’re doing this every year, before the season starts we always have this refresher course for them,” he said.

He added the refresher course helps the coaches get updated.

“This is very important because sometimes there are new rules or new interpretations and we have to always be on top of these new rules,” said Tiukinhoy.

The Cesafi 2019 regular season will open on Saturday, Aug. 31 at the Cebu Coliseum. This season, the University of the Visayas Green Lancers will be aiming for a four-peat in the college division while the University of Cebu Junior Webmasters will try to make it back-to-back in the high school side.

The first game on Saturday will be between the Don Bosco Technological Center (DTBC) Greywolves and the Cebu Eastern College (CEC) Dragons followed with the game between the Cebu Institute of Technology-University (CIT-U) Wildcats and the University of San Jose-Recoletos (UJS-R) Jaguar. (RSC)
