Martin defends WBA Asia belt vs. Tondo

FAST-RISING prospect Carl Jammes Martin makes the first defense of his World Boxing Association (WBA) Asia super bantamweight belt on July 30, 2022 against Tanzanian challenger Charles Tondo at the SM City Lazaro in Manila.

Martin is coming off his toughest test against experienced Ronnie Baldonado last March 12 in Parañaque City. Martin was knocked down in the second round but he weathered the storm and stopped Baldonado in the 11th round to win the vacant WBA Asia belt.

Martin is quickly rising up the world super bantamweight ladder. He’s currently rated No. 11 by the WBA, No. 13 by the International Boxing Federation No. 14 by the World Boxing Organization (WBO) and No. 19 by the World Boxing Council.

The 23-year-old Tondo looks to upset Martin, who’s being considered by some pundits as the next big thing in Philippine boxing.

Tondo is coming off a unanimous decision defeat against unbeaten Brit Dennis MaCann in their WBO Youth super bantamweight bout in England last March 19. Tondo has a solid chin and has never been knocked out in his career.

The 23-year-old Martin is 19-0 with , while Tondo is 12-5-2 with five knockouts.

In the undercard, WBA No. 12 light flyweight Miel Fajardo (8-1-2, 7 KOs) tests his mettle against former world title challenger Richard Claveras (19-9-2, 16 KOs) in a 10-round bout; Jose Roda Jr. (7-1-2, 1 KO) locks horns with journeyman Eduardo Mancito (18-13-2, 9 KOs); Aldren Jake Tayaban (1-0, 1 KO) takes on newcomer Mark Louie Santiago; John Vincent Lauriaga makes his pro debut against Louie Jay Albino (1-1); and Arjhay Recto slugs it out with fellow debutant Jake Acude.
