OLYMPIC silver medalist Carlo Paalam advanced to the quarterfinals of the lightweight division after a points victory over Mongolian Manurbek Seiitbek Uulu in the 19th Asian Games on Sept. 30, 2023 at the HZ Gymnasium in Hangzhou, China.
Paalam got the nod of four of the five judges with scores of 29-28, 29-28, 29-28 and 30-27. The other judge scored it the other way for Seiitbek Uulu, 29-28.
Paalam joins fellow Olympian Eumir Marcial in the quarterfinals. Marcial beat Vietnamese Manh Cuong Nguyen, 5-0, on points last Sept. 29, while John Marvin dropped out in the quarterfinals after a first round stoppage loss to Jong Jaemin.
Southeast Asian (SEA) Games gold medalist Kim Mangrobang and Cebuana Raven Faith Alcoseba failed to capture a podium finish in Women’s Triathlon.
Mangrobang finished in 13th place with a time of 2:13:49, while Alcoseba, a SEA Games bronze medalist, ended up at 16th with a time of 2:24:05.
As of press time, Olympian EJ Obiena and SEA Games bronze medalist Rosegie Ramos were still competing for the gold medal in their respective sports.
Obiena was competing in the Men’s Pole Vault Finals, while Ramos in the Women’s 49KG event of Weightlifting.
The Philippines Women’s Football Team was also playing in the quarterfinals against Japan.
