PH bets skip meet due to virus outbreak

IT CAN’T be denied that the threat of 2019 novel coronavirus acute respiratory disease (2019-nCoV ARD) has affected the competition calendar of the country’s top athletes, including the rising stars from Cebu.

Reigning Southeast Asian (SEA) Games silver medalist Andrew Kim Remolino together with Cebu’s top junior triathletes CJ Lipura, Moira Frances Erediano, Alfred Pacabis, Justine Hermosa, Renz Wynn Corbin and Nicole Marie del Rosario are supposed to fly to Thailand on Feb. 18, 2020 for the 2020 Triathlon Asian Championships, but the 2019-nCoV ARD scare has pushed the parents to cancel the trip.

“We backed out of the race as a precautionary measure on the 2019-nCoV. The parents want safety of their children,” Go For Gold coach Roland Remolino told SunStar Cebu.

He said that despite the cancellation of their trip to Thailand, the team continues to train hard in Cebu.

The country’s top medal prospect for the 2020 Tokyo Olmypics Hidilyn Diaz has also cancelled her 60-day training in China, while the Philippine Sports Commission also postponed the Philippine National Games, Children’s Games and National Sports Summit, among others. (RSC)
