Philippines loses to Iceland, finishes last in 2023 Pinatar Cup

THE Philippines finished its campaign in the 2023 Pinatar Cup without a single win following a 5-0 defeat to Iceland in its last match on Feb. 22 (PH time) at the Pinatar Arena in San Pedro del Pinatar, Spain.

The Filipinas conceded a goal in the 20th minute to 16th ranked Iceland. It was scored by Amanda Andradóttir, who continued to show her top form with another goal in the 51st minute to give Iceland.

Iceland’s onslaught continued with a third goal in the 71st minute from Selma Magnúsdóttir.

Hlín Eiríksdóttir added a fourth goal in the 80th minute, while Alexandra Jóhannsdóttir added insult to injury with a goal in the third minute of extra time.

With the win, Iceland won the pocket tournament after finishing with the most points with seven.

Wales settled at second place with five points after a 1-1 draw with Scotland.

Scotland finished third with four points, while the Philippines ended up at last place with no points.

The 2023 Pinatar Cup is part of the Philippines’ preparation for the 2023 Fifa Women’s World Cup in July in New Zealand.

The Philippines is in Group A with hosts New Zealand, Norway and Switzerland. (EKA)
