THE Roxas Vanguards slipped past the ARQ Builders-Lapu-Lapu Chiefs, 75-70, thanks to guard Mario Bonleon Jr., who canned a triple with 37 seconds left to give his team the lead for good in the Pilipinas Super League Pearl of the Orient Cup Presented by Cocolife and Powered by Smart 5G at the Manuel Roxas Sports Center.

With the game tied at 70-all after Lapu-Lapu’s Vincent Minguito swished a long three-pointer with 1:12 to go, Bonleon found himself open at the left wing, caught a pass from Levi dela Cruz, and drained a three-pointer to shatter the deadlock and put Roxas in front, 73-70.

Lapu-Lapu had a shot at trimming the deficit or even tying the game but Norris Arana missed a triple and Jerick Nacpil sealed the Roxas’ win with two makes from the charity stripe.

The win boosted Roxas’ win-loss record to 8-1 while Lapu-Lapu dropped to 4-5.

Bonleon led the Vanguards with 23 points and seven rebounds, while dela Cruz added 10 points and eight boards.

The Chiefs were paced by Ferdinand Lusdoc who had 25 points and nine boards. However, the left-handed banger could not finish the game due to cramps. Minguito finished with 12 points, 11 rebounds, three assists, and three steals, while Rino Berame produced 11 points and grabbed 16 boards. (JNP)
