Triathletes stay fit despite quarantine

SINCE the enhanced community quarantine (ECQ) was implemented, the athletes and fitness buffs have gone for alternative workouts to stay fit amid the global health crisis.

For Cebuano triathletes, the advent of technology helps them to continue with their training routines as a group despite being in different places.

National team coach Roland Remolino told SunStar Cebu what they’ve been up to in a time when people are advised to just stay at home to stop the spread of the coronavirus disease (Covid-19).

He said they’re using the Google Meet App, a video conference application that can handle up to 250 people. Remolino’s online students represent the Talisay Luigi Triathlon Group and the Go For Gold Triathlon Team.

The triathletes do this every day with the use of a roller for the bike routine, land drill for the swim exercise and stationary run or drills for the run. National triathlete and Southeast Asian (SEA) Games silver medalist Andrew Kim Remolino demos the swimming drill for the athletes to follow.

“We have to find a way. This video-conference app has been helpful for us. One hour and 20 minutes in the morning and another hour in the afternoon. We do it every day except Sunday afternoon,” said the older Remolino.

He said the usual video-conference has more than 20 athletes.

“It’s different from the actual when I’m in front of them because you can see the intensity. But at least we’re doing something to stay in shape and race-ready despite the community quarantine,” added Remolino, who hails from Talisay City, Cebu.

Remolino said the online training aims to keep the athlete moving. “If the athlete suddenly stops physical activity it needs a lot of recoveries to do when things get back to normal,” he said.

With local and international triathlon events now canceled or postponed, Remolino can only hope for better days.

“Only God knows when this will be over. We just have to follow the guidelines of the government and cooperate,” he said. (RSC)
