Akbayan Youth has criticized Sen. Bato dela Rosa for prioritizing mandatory ROTC (Reserve Officers’ Training Corps), arguing it disregards the current needs of young people.

At a time when our generation is calling for inclusive education, mental health support and genuine civic engagement, Senator Bato turns a blind eye and instead prioritizes Mandatory ROTC — dictating how the youth should serve and express love for the country.

ROTC isn’t the only way to show love for the country. Forcibly implementing ROTC isn’t patriotism; it’s brainwashing youth into believing there’s only one way to express their love for the nation. Senator Bato, we will never be forced into silence or false obedience just to satisfy your outdated notions of nationalism.

Youth deserve the freedom to choose how they believe they can best show their love for the country. Whether it’s ROTC, CWTS (Civic Welfare Training Service), or LTS (Literacy Training Service), every form of service must be treated with dignity and support. Our patriotism must be rooted in freedom, not fear.
