Cebu’s bustling energy is undeniable, but it’s often accompanied by a chaotic symphony of traffic that raises significant concerns about road safety. From motorcycles weaving through lanes to pedestrians navigating busy intersections, the daily commute can feel like a high-stakes endeavor. Recent incidents, including a viral video of a reckless cyclist, highlight the urgent need for a more disciplined and safer road environment.
One of the most pressing issues is the apparent disregard for traffic regulations. Whether it’s ignoring traffic lights, swerving without signaling, or the sheer volume of unregistered vehicles, these actions contribute to a hazardous landscape. While traffic management bodies are working to enforce rules, their efforts are often hampered by the lack of clear ordinances and penalties, particularly for new modes of transport like bicycles.
Beyond enforcement, there’s a vital need for public education and awareness. Many drivers and riders, perhaps due to a lack of formal training or simply ingrained habits, may not fully grasp the implications of their actions. Seminars on defensive driving, as planned by Napule, are a step in the right direction, but these must be widespread and consistently implemented.
Improving road safety isn’t solely the responsibility of traffic enforcers or policymakers. It’s a collective endeavor. Every driver, rider and pedestrian shares a role in fostering a culture of respect, vigilance and adherence to rules.
