A security guard at SM Megamall in Metro Manila went viral for all the wrong reasons when he violently shooed away a schoolgirl selling sampaguita flowers.

The incident, caught on video, shows the guard using excessive force against the young vendor who was still in her uniform.

The guard’s actions were unacceptable. He did not need to use such aggression. A simple conversation or a gentle reminder about mall policies would have sufficed.

His behavior was not just harsh; it was inhumane.

SM Megamall took the right step by firing the guard. No business should tolerate such behavior, especially not towards a child. This incident highlights the need for better training in customer service and empathy among security personnel.

The schoolgirl was just trying to earn a living.

Selling sampaguita is a common sight in Metro Manila, often a way for children from less privileged backgrounds to help their families. The guard’s response to her was not only disproportionate but also lacked the compassion we expect from those people we expect to secure public order.

We must remember that these vendors are not the enemy. They are part of our community, contributing in their own small way. Security guards should protect, not intimidate. They are the face of the mall, and their actions reflect on the establishment.

We need to foster a culture where security personnel are seen as helpers, not enforcers.

Let’s hope this incident leads to positive changes, ensuring no child is ever treated this way again in any public space.
