As we celebrate Nutrition Month this July, under the theme “Sa PPAN: Sama-sama sa Nutrisyong Sapat Para sa Lahat! Food at Nutrition Security, Maging Priority! Sapat na Pagkain, Karapatan Natin!,” it’s a perfect time to reflect on a profound truth: what we eat isn’t just about satisfying hunger; it’s about building our health, day by day. As a registered nutritionist dietitian, I work with individuals looking to prevent chronic illnesses like hypertension, diabetes and even cancer, and for those already diagnosed, to achieve remission. My experience consistently shows that while medical interventions are crucial, true and lasting health transformation often begins not in the pharmacy, but right in our kitchens.
We often focus on treating diseases after they appear. But what if we could significantly reduce our risk of getting sick in the first place? And for those already living with a chronic condition, what if food could be a key ally in managing symptoms, reducing medication needs, and even achieving remission? The good news is, it can. This means shifting our perspective: from merely eating to live, to eating to thrive. Nutrition isn’t just complementary medicine; it is, in many ways, foundational medicine.
Consider the simple, yet revolutionary, power of an organic whole-food plant-based diet. This isn’t about complicated rules or deprivation; it’s about embracing the vibrant goodness that nature offers. Think about fresh fruits, colorful vegetables, hearty whole grains like brown rice and corn and power-packed legumes such as monggo (mung beans) and kidney beans, along with nuts and seeds. As someone who volunteers at the Cebu Farmers Market, I’ve seen firsthand the dedication of our local farmers practicing organic methods to bring us chemical-free, nutrient-dense produce. When we choose these foods, especially organic ones, we fill our bodies with essential vitamins, minerals, fiber, and powerful antioxidants – all crucial for a strong immune system and healthy bodily functions. Every food choice you make truly becomes your shield and your healer.
This way of eating naturally addresses many of the root causes of chronic diseases:
• For Hypertension: The natural compounds in plants, especially their high fiber and potassium content, are excellent at lowering and maintaining healthy blood pressure.
• For Diabetes: Whole plant foods, unlike refined sugars and processed ingredients, help stabilize blood sugar and improve the body’s response to insulin, often leading to better diabetes management and, for some, even reversal of Type 2 diabetes.
• For Cancer: A plant-rich diet is packed with phytochemicals that can protect cells from damage and inhibit cancer growth, acting as a crucial defense mechanism.
This Nutrition Month, let’s empower ourselves with knowledge and action.
Your daily meals hold incredible power. Let’s use this Nutrition Month to make conscious, health-affirming food choices that not only prevent disease but pave the way for a future of vitality and well-being. It’s an investment in yourself, your family and our community’s collective health.
