GERPAUL Valero’s journey to success in boxing was far from easy. Looking back at his early career, which began with a difficult record of just 1 win and 13 losses, it's clear that he faced numerous setbacks. Yet, for the fighter from Mandaue City, Cebu, these challenges only strengthened his resolve to make boxing his way of life. Coming from a poor family, Gerpaul was driven not only by his passion for the sport but also by a deep desire to provide for himself and his loved ones.
At just 12 years old, Gerpaul began participating in amateur boxing events, hoping to earn enough to support his studies and help with his family's daily needs. His passion for boxing was matched only by his determination to escape poverty. By age 14, he was already willing to take on any challenge, accepting defeat with quiet resolve. After all, even a loss earned him 100 pesos, while a win brought in 150 pesos—a valuable sum for someone from his background.
In 2011, Gerpaul's big break came when he emerged as the Super Flyweight Champion at 115 lbs in the reality boxing game show Buhay Boksingero. This victory marked the beginning of a new chapter in his career, opening doors to international opportunities. By 2014, he was fighting in Thailand; in 2015, he traveled to Japan to train as a sparring partner for other boxers; and in 2016, he fought in Australia, expanding his experience on the global stage.
In his professional career, Gerpaul continued to advance under the mentorship of his long-time trainer, Brix Flores. In 2015, he achieved a major milestone by winning the Asia Boxing Federation Super Flyweight Championship—a powerful testament to his perseverance, skill, and growth as a fighter.
Despite the many challenges he has faced, Gerpaul remains steadfast in his commitment to boxing. Now 33 years old and working as a boxing trainer in South Korea, he continues to support his family while staying deeply connected to his passion for the sport. For Gerpaul, boxing is more than just a career—it’s a lifelong dedication, a passion that will always be at the heart of his life, both professionally and personally.
