THE heated rivalry between the multi-titled University of the Visayas (UV) Green Lancers and the University of Cebu (UC) Webmasters will once again take center stage this coming Sunday, Aug. 17, 2025, in the municipality of Carmen, Cebu.
The special match between these two top collegiate teams from the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (Cesafi) is being held as part of the town’s fiesta celebration, led by Mayor Carlo T. Villamor.
Spectators can expect explosive action, as these two Cesafi finalists renew their fierce competition.
In the past three CESAFI seasons (2022, 2023, 2024), coach Gary Cortes’ Green Lancers thrillingly defeated the Webmasters in the final series to complete a three-peat championship run.
But despite UC’s consecutive defeats, the Webmasters have never lost their determination. They strengthened their lineup and became aggressive in their recruitment efforts.
Acknowledging the huge challenge ahead, UC coach Kern Sesante has instilled discipline and patience in his players, fueling their resurgence.
Just last week, UC clinched the Maasin City Inter-Collegiate Invitational championship, which significantly boosted their morale.
Sophomore Ricofer Sordilla was named Most Valuable Player of the week-long tournament. He will be joined by Leonard Luther, who is expected to provide solid support on the offensive end for UC.
On the other hand, the Lancers remain intact, with their lineup headlined by promising talents AJ Sacayan, Raul Gentallan, and Ivo Salarda.
“(Municipal) Councilor Rashid Tacocong really wants basketball fans to enjoy. This is going to be a great game,” said Carmen Mayor’s Cup Inter-Barangay tournament commissioner Ronnie Mata.
Aside from Councilor Tacocong, who serves as chairman of the sports committee, Mata is strongly supported by Vice Mayor Gerard Vilamor, SK Federation President Hannah Trixy Bejoc, and co-commissioner Roger Menchavez.
The UV-UC match will tip off at 7:30 p.m. Before the exhibition match, Barangay Cantipay will face Cantumog at 6 p.m. as part of the ongoing 4th Mayor’s Cup Inter-Barangay basketball tournament.
After the friendly game, Triumfo will then go head-to-head with Lower Natimao-an at 9 p.m. / JBM
