AFTER more than a year of steady practice, Mabin Villamin Jr. finally struck gold, claiming his first championship at the Sugbuanon Bowlers United (SugBU) Sunday Shootout on Sunday, Aug. 10, 2025, at the SM Seaside City Cebu Bowling Center.

Villamin, a public servant at the Commission on Audit for over 25 years, delivered a decisive 188-pin game in the final shootout to secure the Bowler of the Week title.

His victory was hard-earned, with months of competing in weekly events in Cebu and Cagayan de Oro City — where he is currently assigned — sharpening his form.

Frenzy Williams finished second with 158, while her husband, Terence “TBonz” Williams, placed third with 151.

Villamin and the seasoned Williams couple advanced to the final shootout after topping their respective divisions earlier in the day.

TBonz dominated Division A with an 803 four-game aggregate, followed by Ted Convocar Ted Convocar with 790 and Heber Alqueza with 780. GJ Buyco (769) and Jomar Jumapao (714) completed the top 5.

Villamin tallied 793 pinfalls in Division B to secure his spot in the finals, edging out Feben Landazabal (764), Jay Phillimore (762), Steve Bahani (757), and Lemuel Paquibot (715).

Division C saw Frenzy leading the pack with 710 total pinfalls, ahead of Romy Mauro (661), Steph Maquiling (608), Bebie Mauro (598), and Flor Hodgkinson (595).

SugBU president Edgar Marshall Alqueza noted that last Sunday’s tournament drew fewer participants than usual, as several bowlers from northern Cebu and Lapu-Lapu City were unable to make it due to road closures during the Ironman 70.3 triathlon.

In a separate development, SugBU’s rising talent Joma Avila bagged second runner-up honors in the recently-concluded Mixed Classified Division of the Datba Kadayawan Open at SM Lanang in Davao City. Avila and teammate Danny Sabang represented SugBU in the event. / SUNSTAR CEBU SPORTS
